Genesis, Chapter One

The Book of Birth: Part One

1 At the start, God made the skies and the earth. 2 Now the Earth lacked form, and was void. It was dark o'er the seas, and the Force of God was set in the air on top of the sea. 3 And God said, "Let there be light!" and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he split the light from the dark. 5 God called the light "day," and the depths of the dark he called "night." And there was dusk, and there was dawn--the first day.

6 And God said, "Let there be a space in the midst of the seas so that wet and wet may be spaced out." 7 So God made the space and split the wet less than the space from the wet that lay on top of it. And it was so. 8 God called the space "sky." And there was dusk, and there was dawn-day two.

9 And God said, "Let the wet which lies more low than the sky be brought to one place, and let dry ground show." And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the wet that came to one place he called "seas." And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, "Let the land give rise to plants: some which bear seeds and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, each in line with its type." And it was so. 12 The land made plants: some which bore seeds and trees on the land that bore fruit, each in line with its type. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was dusk, and there was dawn--the third day.

14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the depth of the sky to break up the day and the night, and let them serve as signs to mark times of the sun and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the depth of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 God made two great lights--the big light to rule the day and the small light to rule the night. He made the stars, too. 17 God set them in the depth of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to rule the day and the night, and to break up the light and the dark. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was dusk, and there was dawn--the fourth day.

20 And God said, "Let the sea teem with live beasts, and let birds fly o'er the earth and cross the width of the sky." 21 So God made the great beasts of the sea and each thing that lives and moves in the sea, in line with their kinds, and each bird with wings in line with its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, "Be rich and grow in sum and fill the seas, and let the birds grow on the earth." 23 And there was dusk, and there was dawn-day five.

24 And God said, "Let the land give rise to beasts in lots of kinds: farm beasts, beasts that move on the ground, and wild beasts, each of its own kind." And it was so. 25 God made the wild beasts of their kinds, the farm beasts of their kinds, and all the beasts that move on the ground, of their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our form, to match us, and let them rule o'er the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, the farm beasts, o'er all the earth, and o'er all the beasts that move on the ground." 27 So God made man in his own form, in the form of God he made him; boy and girl he made them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be rich and grow in sum; fill the earth and rule it. Rule o'er the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and each live beast that moves on the ground." 29 Then God said, "I give you each plant that makes seeds on the face of the whole earth and each tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the beasts that move on the ground-all that has the breath of life in it-I give each green plant for food." And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was quite good. And there was dusk, and there was dawn-the sixth day.
