The Book of Birth: Part Three
1 Now the snake was the most sly of all the fierce beasts the Lord God had made. He said to the girl, "Is it true that God said, 'You must not eat from the trees in the patch'?" 2 The girl said to the snake, "We may eat fruit from trees in the patch, 3 but God did say, "You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the heart of the patch, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'" 4 "You will not die for sure," the snake said to the girl. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be freed, and you will be like God, and know of good and bad." 6 When the girl saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and looked nice, and at the same time would help add good sense, she took some and ate it. She gave some to the man, who was with her, as well, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were cleared, and they saw that they were nude, so they sewed fig leaves and made their own clothes. 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he walked in the yard in the cool of the day and they hid from the Lord God in the trees. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, "Where are you?" 10 He said, "I heard you in the yard, and I was scared since I was nude, so I hid." 11 And he said "Who told you that you were nude? Did you eat from the tree that I said you were not to eat from?" 12 The man said, "The girl you put here with me-she gave me some fruit from the tree-and I ate it." 13 Then the Lord God said to the girl, "What is this you have done?" The girl said, "The snake tricked me and I ate." 14 So the Lord God said to the snake, "Since you have done this, Cursed are you on top of all the tame beasts and all the wild beasts! You will crawl on your front and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put hate in the midst of you and the girl, and in the midst of your kids and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." 16 To the girl he said, "I will, in a big way, raise the pain you face when you have kids; with much pain you shall give birth. Your wish shall be for your spouse, and he will rule o'er you." 17 To Adam he said, "Since you paid heed to your wife and ate from the tree from which you were told, 'You shall not eat of it,' Cursed is the ground due to you; through toil in pain you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 It will make thorns and sharp blooms for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food till you go back to the ground, since from it you came, for dust you are, and to dust you shall go back." 20 The man named his wife Eve, for she would be the mom of all who lived. 21 The Lord God made clothes of skin for the two and clothed them. 22 And the Lord God said, "The man is now one of us; he knows good and bad. He is not fit to reach out his hand and take from the tree of life and eat, and live for all of time." 23 So the Lord God sent him out of the patch to work the ground from which he had come. 24 Once he had forced the man out, he placed on the east side of the yard good guards, who could fly and who bore gold rings on their heads, and a sword on fire which flashed back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
